As we get older, the ability to learn things gets harder and harder. Classes aren’t mandatory and cost money, versus learning things in primary school. And while the dry first years of a kid’s life are where they retain the most knowledge, why not take advantage?
Lingokids is an Android and iOS based app that teaches and helps children learn to speak different languages. This sets the bar for helping kids who might need to know another language later on in life and not have to worry about any of the learning obstacles.
Based out of Madrid, Spain, Lingokids started off in teaching their child users English. Now the app offers different lessons in simplified Chinese. Spanish, along with other languages, are the works for being added as content material. Lingokids intends to make language learning for children less time consuming and cheaper, a win all the way around.
The company was founded in 2014 by brother and sister Cristobal and Maria Viedma, and was previously known as Monkimum. Since the rebranding, Lingokids has raised over $400 million in funding for the app. The project to get kids learning is being backed by 500 Startups, along with JME Venture Capital, Bessemer Ventures Partners, and Sabadell Venture, among others, were main backers of Lingokids’ intention to get kids learning.
Studies have shown that from the ages of 2-6, children are most susceptible to learning. Lingokids is taking full advantage of this by providing language learning based materials that are suitable and engaging for children of this age. The app applies different games and fun activities to keep children from getting bored. An educational video game for children and parents alike.
Unity3D is the learning platform that Lingokids uses for its gaming and entertainment aspects. A parent portal is also available so that parents can monitor and track what they’re children are learning, slightly teaching the parent as well. While the app has no ads, there are in-app purchases available like the $59.99 a year subscription for extra content and learning material.
Lingokids’ app tackles the problem with kids getting bored too easily. The games provided are engaging enough to keep the child wanting to learn while simultaneously keeping the attention focused and on track. This immersive program stimulates a child and uses their learning retention to the best of its ability.
The company is using its funding to not only add languages, but turn Lingokids into a website. This in turn will make it suitable for teachers to use in classrooms that use electronic whiteboards through Windows/MacOS. Oxford University Press has also become a recent partner, hoping to soon publish physical books to distribute different language learning packages within schools. OUP has currently employed a pre-school course called “Little Friends.” The program is just the start to what Lingokids could do for the young generation.
The lessons that Lingokids provides cover multiple subjects, from family and nature to animals and parts of the body. Children are exposed to shapes, numbers, and colors like any teachers would start with when teaching a new group of learners. Kids are able to pick their own lessons based on whatever looks interesting to them or want to replay, working as a memorization process that the children will keep for years to come.
The app offer different writing exercises along with the options to hear the world in the desired language and repeat it back. Some categories come with song and printable worksheets for the child to sing and do outside of the app. This really brings in parental participation and bonding over the language.
Lingokids app allows multiple but separate profiles so that more than one child can learn but not impede or disrupt another’s progress. With over 30,000 vocabulary words and different structures in grammar, Lingokids proves to be an effective way in teaching preschoolers a second language naturally.
